2012- Election of Francois Hollande
- Not only overturned the monarchy, but also made the political power of the church a controversial issue. This lead to the establishment of the First Republic.
1792-1804 First Republic ‘Liberty, Equality, Fraternity’
- The First Republic was the under the direction of Napoleon Bonaparte. The end of the Reign of Terror occured druing this time period, but the republic failed horribly.
1848-1852 Second Republic: Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, President
- The Second Republic was a complete fail. It was under the direction of Napoleon III, Naploleon II's nephew.
1870-1940 Third Republic
- The Third Republic was a republican government that replaced the Second Republic after it collapsed. World War I took place during this regime.
1914-1918 World War I
- Massive casualties in trenches in north-east France; 1.3 million Frenchmen are killed and many more wounded by the end of the war.
1919 Treaty of Versailles
- The Treaty of Versailles was created in 1919. This caused France to regain Alsace- Lorraine. Germany also agreed to reparations.
1939-45 World War II
- Germany occupies much of France. General de Gaulle establishes government-in-exile in London and, later, Algiers. Rise of French Resistance.
1940-1944 The Vichy Regime
- The Vichy Regime was the French government during this time period. It was very important during this time because this was the time of World War I. It was proclaimed by Marshal Philippe Petain.
1944-1946 Provisional Government of the French Republic, headed by Charles de Gaulle
- Allied forces land at Normandy leading to liberation of France. De Gaulle sets up provisional government. De Gaulle resigns as provisional president in 1946 and Socialist Felix Gouin takes over the provisional government.
1946-1958 Fourth Republic: Charles de Gaulle
- The Fourth Republic was a republican government that was adopted after World War II. Charles de Gaulle was the ruler of this government. The Fourth Republic failed just like the previous republics.
1958- present Fifth Republic: François Hollande(2012)
- The Fifth Republic is the current regime in France, created by Charles de Gaulle. It is currently ruled by Francois Hollande and is the most successful of the five Republics.
2012- Election of Francois Hollande
- The Election of Francois Hollande was big for France because he was running against Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy basically ruined France and when Hollande was elected, he immediately started "cleaning up" after Sarkozy. France is already a way better place to live and it has only been 7 months since he was elected (May).
